1.
SWING AND BALLROOM DANCING AT THE RODEO THIS SATURDAY
http://www.explorefairbanks.com/events/detail/5296/swing-and-ballroom-dancing
Our dance is ending a half hour early this Saturday, at 9 p.m., so that the Ballroom Dance Club of Fairbanks can put on a Country Two-Step lesson by Anchorage instructors, Van Rauch and Liv Froholm from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. See item #4 below. So to enjoy dancing to as much swing and ballroom music as possible in the shortened time this Saturday, arrive soon after at 7 p.m. and get your party started! And to help celebrate Cinco de Mayo weekend, the good folks at the Rock N Rodeo are giving us some Mexican party paraphernalia—yes, including sombreros—to spice up the evening's festivities. To reinforce that theme, I'll provide a selection of swing and ballroom tunes with a Tex-Mex and Latin flavor worked into the usual musical offerings. For example, I've got a good waltz on a CD I bought from a mariachi band after watching them perform at an open-air nightclub in Puerto Vallarta some years ago. I've never used it at a dance...until now! And this weekend only, no cover charge until 10:00 p.m. Ages 21 and up. Great dance floor and sound system! Spend money and tip well to maintain our welcome. And good news, at our behest, they've laid in a selection of better wines. See item #2.

2. ROCK N RODEO OWNER RESPONDS TO SWING CLUB MEMBERS' WINE REQUESTS
Curtis Hatcher, owner of the Rock N Rodeo, has happily responded to our requests for some better wines at his establishment. His new offerings include both whites and reds, all suggested by some of you.

3. LIV AND VAN TO DO WEEKEND HUSTLE WORKSHOP (flyer attached)
LIv Froholm and Van Rauch, our favorite West Coast swing instructors from Anchorage, will be in town this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 3, 4 and 5, to put on a hustle workshop, with some swing and nightclub two-step in the mix, at the Pioneer Park Dance Hall. For details see the attached flyer or visit www.ballroomfairbanks.org

4. LIV AND VAN TO TEACH AT ROCK N RODEO (photo attached)
Liv and Van will be at the Rock N Rodeo this Saturday from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. to give a Country Two-Step lesson, sponsored by the Ballroom Dance Club of Fairbanks. Van competes successfully in Country Two-Step competitions in California.

5. STEVE BROWN & THE BAILERS AT UAF PUB FRIDAY (flyer attached)
Steve Brown and the Bailers are playing and singing at the UAF Pub this Friday night, with the Dry Cabin String Band opening for them at 9 p.m. Cover charge, $7 or $5 with UAF I.D. Ages 21 and up only. Always a packed house! Get there early for the best seat selection.

6. LATIN DANCE LINEUP (photo attached)
At Boston's, a BIG Cinco De Mayo party on Saturday night, May 4 with DJ ATM, Jose Martinez, playing the tunes. Over 21 only. And the annual Gallo's Mexican Restaurant Cinco De Mayo party happens Sunday, May 5. They will have a FREE buffet with drink purchase. Jose will DJ from 7 p.m. to midnight.

7. CINCO DE MAYO PARTY AT BLUE LOON
Saturday, May 4, 9 p.m. DJ, free taco bar, prizes. Cover charge, $5, No smoking in main room, age 21 and up.

8. THERESA BAUER BEGINS AT CHATANIKA SUNDAY (photo attached)
Fresh from her boffo performance in Smokey Joe's Cafe', the Chatanika Nightingale resumes her iconic summer Sunday performances at the Chatanika Lodge this Sunday, running through September. The singing and strumming for dancing and listening goes from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. All ages welcome. Full bar, food, and nice little hardwood dance floor. A little bit country, a little bit rock n roll, a little bit easy listenin', and a whole lot of beautiful singing!

9. STEFANI TO TEACH SWING AT FAIRBANKS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL
http://fsaf.org/register.php?listing=true

The first week will cover East Coast Swing and Lindy, and possibly some West Coast Swing, depending on students' preference. The second week will cover Cha Cha, Mambo, and possibly Samba, depending on students' preference.

10. ARGENTINE TANGO AT FAIRBANKS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL
This sounds very cool! July 22–July 26 at the Artisan's Courtyard.
Check out the instructor, Miss Mirabai Deranja at: http://www.miratango.com/

11. HOWLING DOG OPENS FRIDAY
Dog owner Ralph Glasgow says wear your bunny boots, dress in layers, and drive carefully into the still-hard-pack-covered parking lot this Friday and Saturday for Opening Weekend at The Howling Dog Saloon. Ukelele Russ and his band will perform. Ages 21 and up.

12. VOLUNTEER EAST COAST SWING LEADS NEEDED
Again this year, I'll teach an introductory East Coast swing lesson to UAF faculty and staff during the day-long UAF Staff Appreciation Day, 10:30 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, May 15, upstairs in the Student Recreation Center. Last year we were short by about 9 leads. So this year I asked the planners if I could bring in some ECS leads from our swing and ballroom crowd to partner with what I presume will again be a surplus of follows. Non-UAF-affiliated volunteers will be allowed into SRC free of charge to help even the ratio of leads to follows. If you want to help, please send me a note to that effect, kurt.byers@alaska.edu
